Applying for jobs can feel overwhelming, especially when you are competing with hundreds of other applicants. Many candidates focus heavily on submitting as many applications as possible, but the most successful job seekers focus on quality and authenticity.

Small improvements to your resume, application responses and interview approach can improve your chances of progressing through the recruitment process. Here are a few practical tips to help you present yourself with confidence, and stand out for the right reasons.

AI and Your Job Application. Why Human Still Wins

Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly more popular for writing resumes, cover letters and application responses. I will admit, it does sometimes produce great content. The only problem with this? It also created the exact same content for each of your competitors using the same approach.

I help a local company with their recruitment, and I just recently reviewed 400+ applciations for a role. What I saw was unsurprising, but quite frustrating, from a hiring perspective. Each of the well written cover letters and resumes were all identical in tone, phrasing and structure. Combine this with American spelling and grammar, and it was obvious that little to no effort was put into their application.

If you're using AI as a helpful tool in your job search, you need to make sure you are editing out the common words and phrases used by ChatGPT. Not only this, you need to recreate the human element - focus on your unique value, your strengths and what you can bring to this job. Remove all the fluff and jargon, and show the hiring manager why you are the best for the job, and how you can make their lives easier.

Quick Tips to Improve Your Resume

A well written resume should quickly communicate your value to an employer. Hiring managers often spend less than a minute scanning each resume, so clarity and structure are critical.

Here are a few simple ways to strengthen your resume:

  1. Start with a strong professional summary that promotes your strengths as they specifically relate to the job you're applying for.

  2. Focus on achievements rather than just duties by describing outcomes and improvements.

  3. Use clear headings and bullet points so employers can easily scan your experience.

  4. Tailor your resume to each job advertisement by reflecting key skills and requirements from the role description.

  5. Keep your information relevant and concise, prioritising experience that supports the role you are applying for.

  6. Proofread carefully before submitting to avoid spelling or formatting errors that may distract from your experience.

Even small changes can make a big difference in how clearly your experience is communicated.

Interview Tips that Make a Strong Impression

An interview is your opportunity to bring your resume to life and demonstrate how your experience applies to the role. Preparation and communication style often matter just as much as the answers themselves.

Here are a few quick tips that can help you perform confidently in interviews:

  1. Structure your responses using clear examples - highlight the situation, your actions and the outcome achieved.

  2. Demonstrate reflection and self awareness by acknowledging lessons learned, professional growth or areas you are developing.

  3. Connect your experience to the company's goals by showing how your skills can contribute to their priorities and challenges.

  4. Ask questions about the role and the team. This can shift the interview to a more conversational tone, and show you have geniune interest in the position.

  5. Come prepared! Research the company, any current projects they have advertised on their website or LinkedIn, and show the hiring manager that you have already put effort in.

Approaching interviews with preparation and intention helps you move beyond just answering questions, and allows you to present yourself as capable and well prepared.
